Bude Coast

The hard edge of a horizon line sweeps across my canvas like the decisive cut of Bude's breakwater against the sea. But beneath this bold geometric statement, earth pigments and acrylic mediums blur and shift, creating a dialogue between intention and natural processes.

Here, in North Cornwall, human geometry and natural force engage in an eternal dialogue - much like the interplay of sharp lines and flowing pigments in these works. The delicious coming together of hard and soft, sharp and blurred, synthetic and natural, reflects the variations in the landscape - coast and moor, land and sea, nature and humankind.

This is Bude's story - a place where Victorian engineering meets raw Atlantic power. The straight lines of the canal and the careful angles of the breakwater still assert themselves against nature's fluid forms, creating the very tension I love to capture between my hard-edged acrylic marks and the flowing earth pigments beneath.

These works explore the threshold between human order and natural chaos. Each piece captures that moment of transition - when the geometric certainty of engineering meets the unpredictable surge of a north coast swell.

In these pieces, you'll find iron-rich golds and browns of Bude's stratified cliffs, where layers of sandstone and shale create nature's own ruled lines, soft washes that echo the mists rolling in across the bay and sharp horizons against turbulent skies.

Each painting holds multiple perspectives of this dynamic coastline - the precision of the sea pool's edges contrasts with the organic movement of tides that fill it and the storm-weathered breakwater stands in a stark line against the softness of the golden beach, whilst around them, sand and water create ever-shifting patterns.

In this new collection I bring you my Cornwall. When you stand before these pieces, you're not just seeing one view - you're experiencing the landscape from multiple perspectives simultaneously, grounded by authentic earth pigments yet lifted by contemporary expression.
