The Pit
'The Pit' aka Tommy's Pit in Bude is where many local children learn to swim. Under Barrel Rock, at the very end of the breakwater, it is one of those places so deeply embedded in the community that it is inconceivable to imagine it not being there.
But with climate change and the risk of rising sea levels, the future of such landmarks is uncertain. Being able to capture it in all its glory at this time locks in a moment of history, a part of Bude that will live on in memory regardless of its fate.
This is an original mixed media painting - charcoal, hand made local earth pigment paint and acrylic on canvas.
The natural materials for the paint have been gathered from the Bude area, processed by hand and left in a fairly coarse state to add texture.
Paintings containing these natural materials literally have the land that inspired them in the artwork, bringing a real sense of the landscape into the work. They inform the choice of colour palette to ensure an authentic feel and connection to the subject.
The painting is 120cm wide and 100cm tall and is supplied with fixings for wall hanging and off-white painted deep edges.
Mixed media on deep box canvas, unframed.
Signed on the reverse with certificate of authenticity.
