'Wild Cliff' is a view that was part of my daily life growing up in Bude. Based on the headlands stretching out from Widemouth Bay towards Trevose Head, this is a view that captivates and inspires anyone with a love of the coast.

I could see the headlands from my bedroom window as a child, and as a teen spent many happy moments at the higher Widemouth viewpoint, watching the weather rolling in, bands of heavy rain sweeping across the bay, the view disappearing into the storm.

It was that wild, untamed energy that cemented my love of this place, a respect for the elements, and a reminder of how powerful and alive the north Cornish coast really is. Wild Cliff captures that moment: standing on the edge, watching the weather move across the water, witnessing something both beautiful and fierce.

It’s a painting about place and memory, and the landscapes that shape us, drawing us back again and again. Incorporating earth pigments gathered from the Bude area, the land itself is present in the surface of the work. It’s a piece that deepens over time, becoming more meaningful the longer you live with it.

This is an original mixed media painting - charcoal, hand made local earth pigment paint and acrylic on canvas.

Paintings containing these natural materials literally have the land that inspired them in the artwork, bringing a real sense of the landscape into the work. They inform the choice of colour palette to ensure an authentic feel and connection to the subject.
