I’m working thorough a fantastic art programme designed to encourage a loosening up in your art. This is one of my biggest struggles – not getting caught up in the detail. I find that I start out loose, but as I work into a piece I get sucked into trying to make it look realistic, even though my intention is that it’s an abstract work.This programme has already got me thinking about the marks I make, the speed at which I make them and the point at which I stop! It’s also allowed me to give myself permission to play and experiment in ways I haven’t done since at school…. if ever!It’s reminded me that we don’t need to be fearful about making marks. There is no right or wrong. One of the joyous things about creating art is that often our ‘mistakes’ inspire, or even become, some of our best work. That sketch we just couldn’t get ‘right’ suddenly becomes a completely different piece that just ‘works’ when a bit of collage or some bold strokes of paint are applied.As I take that pressure off myself to produce a complete and technically correct piece of work I’m having so much fun with the process and not worrying about the end result. I’m rediscovering the value of sketchbooks and speed exercises to flex those creative muscles.The image is a close up of a piece that has undergone numerous transformations, and this was taken after obliterating the original design and then scraping and sandpapering back to reveal the underneath layers. The colours exposed are beautiful, and there’s no way I would have been able to create these kind of marks without going through the experimental process.Do not fear experimentation – it is, by definition, the process of trying out new ideas. And without experimentation we don’t push our own boundaries, step outside our comfort zone and try new things.
